Anthony Friend is a South African artist based in New York. His practice moves across ceramics, photography and painting, connected by an ongoing interest in form, proportion, surface and light.

For nearly two decades, Anthony has worked as a photographer, developing a visual language shaped by composition, restraint and the relationship between subject and space. That way of seeing continues through his work in clay, informing his approach to scale, balance, texture and form.

His ceramic practice is grounded in hand-building, carving and an exploration of material. Working primarily in porcelain and stoneware, Anthony creates sculptural vessels, lighting, wall pieces and functional objects. Forms are often reduced and architectural, allowing weight, balance, texture and the evidence of the hand to remain present.

Rather than treating objects as isolated pieces, Anthony is interested in how they occupy and alter a space—how a surface catches light, how scale changes our relationship to an object, and what it feels like to live with the work over time.

Anthony’s work in ceramics and painting is presented under Anthony Lucas, connecting these evolving bodies of work within a distinct art and design practice.

Anthony works from his studio in New York, where visits can be arranged by appointment.
